A knuckle boom crane folds behind the cab instead of lying along the deck, so the truck keeps its payload, and it reaches over an obstacle rather than around it. That is why they end up on drywall, precast, roofing, poured wall and general construction work.
Capacity is quoted in ton-metres, so a "20 ton" crane does not lift 20 tons at full reach. Each page below carries the real numbers: the lift and the reach for every boom configuration in that size.

The small end, 2 to 9.5 ton, covers service bodies and light delivery. The middle, 10 to 30 ton, is where most drywall and precast work sits. Above 30 ton you are into heavy precast, structural steel and specialist lifting.
